doug,
because it is half immersed in water most of the time during the changing of tieds etc. and the different bacteria that are in and around the mangrove rich soil, and the toxicity is not known, i always take extra care.... by this i mean,
. ...after ..carving with handtools or power tools , always wash your hands before using your toilet facilities ... or touch your face, wipe your nose etc.
if using a sander or sanding paper, use a protective mask so that you do not breath any of the dust which may or may not contain toxic stuff.. lots of common sense helps and also if you can check out in some of the wood books for all the information you can about it... its density , uses and whatever else they have uncovered whilst using it.

you will not be sorry.... it is really worthwhile carving mangrove wood, just take a few precautions and you achieve a great carving.
