Bob,

What a GREAT story with which to begin the morning! And I send you two
wishes for today ... That either your roadside tent is mobbed with
delighted buyers, cash in hand, and you are stuck at the end of the day
with lots and lots of commissions ... OR ... That no one shows up so
that you have an entire beautiful autumn day to yourself, your hobby,
and your joy in your craft!

Mike and I also had a dream many years ago that one day we could open
our own small art gallery/studio together. He spent many many years on
the road as a marketing/sales rep. Long hours away from home and when
we, our son and I, did get some time with him he was so exhausted that
it was literally tip toe around the house so he could rest up. About 10
years ago events in our lives had him between jobs so to fill his time
he put my art, wood carving, and patterns on the internet. Well, simply
said, he did such a great job he never got to go to another job
interview. What at the time seemed like a terrible calamity for our
family turned out to be a true blessing. Wood carving turned out to be
both our path out of the rat race and into living, loving, and working
together.

As for minor 'mistakes' in your carvings there is a Rule of Thumb in
quilting that comes from the Amish. They always include a mistake in
their quilts. One common one is to place one of the squares upside
down! Another is to make one square a totally different color than it
is suppose to be to make the rest of the quilt. It is their believe that
only God can create something perfect and it is inappropriate for them
to even think that there is such a thing as perfection by human hands!
So maybe those little mistakes are your Amish Upside Down Squares.

Susan

OH! Have a great day carving!!!!

OH - OH! Just a totally random comment here. The term Rule of Thumb
was the name of a law here in the State of Maryland back in the 1800's
until the very early 1900's. The law stated that a husband could beat
his wife as long as he did it with a stick that was no thicker than his
thumb. The beating was only a crime if she could prove, by producing the
stick, that it's thickness was larger than legally allowed. Thankfully
that law is no longer in effect.

Hi folks,

Just a bit dribble from me:

I started carving about 2 years ago and immediately fell in love. I
also began to dream... I began to dream of making a living as a wood
carver. Perhaps living in a nice log cabin in Vermont, opening up a
small shop and becoming sort of my own tourist attraction. Yeah, 'Hi
ya'll! Welcome to Carver Bobs!'

Well circumstances have allowed me to move from Connecticut to Vermont
and to spend most of my time carving. No, I don't have the log cabin,
yet! But I did put up a small screen tent by the roadside in the front
yard, made myself a couple of signs, and attempted to sell some of my
carvings. So now each day, weather permitting, I take my carvings,
tools, paints, radio, coffee, books, ect. and carry them out to my
little 'roadside stand' and do my thing.

And guess what? I'm selling carvings!! Mostly small santa's and
snowmen for $10-$20 dollars but WOW! To have a couple stop by who are
from Texas and buy $50 of 'my stuff' is an amazing thrill. Are my
carvings prize winning quality? Absolutely not! From what I seen out
there they are average at best. Some I'm very pleased
with, even surprised at, and others are just Ok. Well to be honest,
everyone of them has one or more flaws that I would fix or do
differently. But...

Today is going to be a beautiful day! Low 70s and plenty of sunshine.
I'm about to gather up my tools and head outside to 'set up shop'. I'll
probably spend all day out there just carving without anyone stopping at
all, which is the norm or perhaps I'll make a $3 trinket sale. But then
again perhaps today is the day someone will drop by and purchase that
santa with the $85 price tag on it!

Have I become my own tourist attraction? Who Cares!!!!!!!! I'm
carving and living the carver's dream!
