I did finnish a flower stand for Thea in antiek have a look its in my Website 
I bleached it first and than give it 3 coats of deft and than I aplied my umber juice VERY heavy and as it is still wet I covered it with Raw Umber (oil based ) and just wiped off what ever I thought was too much 
Go for it girl
