Hi Chris, I'm not exactly an expert, but have refinished a lot of white
pine, and have had some good results. First thing to consider is the pitch,
white pine is full of pitch, and the wood should be sealed with tung oil,
several coats. The oil will darken the wood. Pine naturally turns a buttery
yellow with age. If you want to keep the wood the colour it is now, use a
water based varnish. This will maintain the white appearance for some time .
If you use the water base varnish, use it without the oil sealer. My
recommendation for the finish would be the oil, and the regular Varathane or
varnish.
