the piece of paduak i used was 2" thick, I went down 1 1/8 at the deepest  
part.  I choose the thick piece because i wanted to be able to  carve  out the 
area behind the masts and larger sails.  My pictures truly  don't  do the depth 
of the carving justice, you would need to see it in  person. the only part of 
the main sails which are connected to the  background is the center strip. I 
may enter it into competition if I ever  put the elbow grease in to sand the 
background better.  paduak is  a very hard wood to hand sand and getting in 
under and around the sails was a  formidable task.  I gave up before I had the 
finish i envisioned but may go  back and try to do some more sanding on it in 
the near future
