Harry:

Lynn forgot to mention to you that he is a darn good flat plane carver. I
guess he's being a little modest. LOL

Great to hear that you are back. Doug mentions the Sloyd knife that Harley
uses (and they are good), but I can tell you from experience that the knives
that Ron Wells makes for Flat plane carving are considerably better (IMHO).
Ron is a well know Flat Plane carver in this neck of the woods.

His carvings and knives can be seen at http://ronwellswoodcarving.com

When I demostrated some cuts on the flat plane carving I did at the carving
seminars to some of my students, they went out and bought Ron's knife
immediately. I have not seen a better knife to cut across end grain as well
as allowing you to make nice flat cuts.

Anyway, it is good to hear that you are back. Looking forward to seeing
your new work!

Blessings

Lynn

Welcome back Harry!! You mentioned Harley and just to let you know
Harley has four books out there. Big Dog would be more than happy to
accept a donation to his cause. Besides Harley, be sure to check out
Gerald Ekern's book. I recently finished a carving from one of his
pattern's and if I ever get around to painting it, I'll post a picture.

If you are serious about flat plane carving, consider picking up one of
Harley's knives, they really help.

Take care,

Doug Evans

i like his scandinavian style carvings and would like
to learn more about it.
it seems to me that the way i usually carve never
seems a comfortable way of carving and that i try to
hard to do the d etails while sometimes less is more (i
think).

do any of you know any other carvers that use this
scandinavian style or flat plane carving to and that
might have written some books or posted some good
tips about it?
