For a beginning carver, after blocking out a figure, animal or caricature
carving, what area do you start detailing first?
This question was brought up the other day and I just assumed that it was up
to the individual. Any other suggestions? Top - down? Front to back?
Thanks

I personally work front to back. My reasoning is that I always do the
harder stuff first. More detailed stuff is in the front, and thus, to me is more
important. you can hide small mistakes easier in the background. Also you
can always go deeper into the wood as you work your way down if you need to,
but you cant add more to the first layer if you didn't leave enough wood. As
in carving a face, I always do detail work on the eyes first, the face won't
work if the eyes are badly done. Imagine detailing a complete bust only to
screw up the eyes at the end. have to throw it away after all that hard
work, but if you start with the eyes and screw them up, when you start over
that's all you have to do twice. I know that there are reasons also, to work back
to front, but my way seems to work for me.
