[Woodcarver] Quick question

When I first started carving caricatures I concentrated on the faces first so as not to waste the piece if the face didn't turn out. Then, I carved the body and head separately joining them when I was satisfied with each. Now, most of the time, I work the piece all over and save the facial features for last. The exception to that is when I'm doing a specific caricature where I need to have a likeness. In that case, I generally carve the head and body separately. Most of the time, the first effort does the job but I could redo the head if I'm not completely satisfied. You'll find that you will find your own way when you gain more experience and confidence.

For a beginning carver, after blocking out a figure, animal or caricature carving, what area do you start detailing first?
This question was brought up the other day and I just assumed that it was up to the individual. Any other suggestions? Top - down? Front to back?
  Thanks
  Jimmy B.
