Well, everyone does what they feel is best, and a lot depends on how safe you 
feel where you live. Of course, the interviewees from "good areas" always say 
on TV, " I was so shocked! We never have trouble in this neighborhood."
However, most forcible entry cases are spur of the moment (or spur of the 
evening), not well thought out acts.  Usually the guys with crisscross 
directories and disks (reverse address ph listings) are bill collectors, PI's, process 
servers, and real estate salesmen, not housebreakers or 2nd story men (perp's 
usually are too young, too dumb, or too strung out to plan much of anything in 
advance).  
BTW - kids at home without an adult are the most gullible when it comes to 
someone knowing the family name and asking to come in and wait.  
OK, I'll shut up on the subject. At least you are aware of what the law 
enforcement/business security approach to this issue is.
