Hi Ed,
Yes take the bark completely off of the stick, down to the nice white or
beige colored wood. Also clean the bark out of the diamond areas. A Dremel
or Foredom with a small bit works really good for that. Do not go to deep
in the diamonds, just clean out until you have the bark removed and it is
smooth in the diamond area.
Sand nice and smooth, it can then be finished many ways. Danish Oil, Tung
Oil, Polyurethane or varathane or plain old varnish. Sticks of course can
be carved on, spirit faces work out really nice. If you wish go to my
