Harry,
There are lots of ways to make a model so that you can have something to measure from in order to economize on the block you glue up for the carving.
If the final carving is to be a large one, consider making the model one half or even one quarter size. Then when you do the glue up for the actual project, you can easily times two or times four each measurement you take off the smaller model.
Oil clay is a convenient material for making a model. It is easily molded and can be reused. There are other options as well. You can make a smaller version in wood, or a combination of wood, clay, or other materials. For example, you can do part of it in wood and then play with the detail by adding clay. Some use a Styrofoam core and add clay to that. If it is an abstract, with large forms, you can do a paper-mache' model, etc. Bend wire or metal to create part of it, and add detail with clay or wax, etc.
Artists often use a wide variety of materials in doing their preliminary models--wire, cloth, string, wood, Styrofoam, clay--anything that will give them the forms they are trying to create. Then they take measurements off the smaller version, multiply by two, three or four, and use those measurements to enlarge it to actual size.
The clay model for my sculpture, Jesus and Mary, is 1/4 size. Thus, I merely needed to "times four" the measurements I took off the model. You can see it at:

hello everyone,
well temperatures are finally well under the freezing point.
however my mood is still high up where it is nice and warm.
i met santa four times yesterday, i swear he looks different every time i see him, lol.
i have a question regarding 3d carving.
i am in the designing faze of 4 abstract carvings (big ones)
my main problem is how do i make sure i have the dimensions correct before i start buying the and carving.
i have tought about using a 3 d computerdrawing program but i am to much of a cluts to work with that.
i just would like to have some kind of a model first to see how it would look before carving. the wood is costly and i would like to have my bases covered before so i don't screw up.
does anyone have some good idears about this and what do you usually do to solve this problem?
