You can use a proportional scale for transferring the model size to
the finished carving size. I find that when I start with a standard
scale such as 1 to 4, the clay model tends to grow slightly until
the size of it is not at the exact scale I wanted when I started. By
using a proportional scale wheel you take the measured size of the
model, then align it on the wheel with the finished size of the
carving you want to do. You can then read all other measurements off
the model and then convert them in the correct proportion to the
finished size.
