The term "nosed" describes the way a gouge, veiner or V tool is sharpened,
with the wings slanted back and the "nose" forward. A bull-nosed chisel is
rounded rather than straight across the cutting edge. The term "thumbnail"
reference is descriptive of not the way the tool is sharpened but the shape
of the tool itself, like a V or U shape. The thumbnail tool has a rounded
bottom like a veiner but has slanted sides like a v tool. Instead of being
straight, however, the sides are curved, thus the term "thumbnail" because
the cut looks like the outline of a thumbnail.
