Hello All...
I have been reading everyone's comments on Pentacryl and have decided to add
my 2 cents. As I am a retired sawmill employee who spent almost 25 years
with the timber industry, hearing about any product that starts with the
word "Penta" really concerns me. Of those 25 years, I was in upper
management for 15. In 1988 we built a brand new, high tech sawmill and
along with that was a problem as to how to keep fresh cut lumber from
staining and developing mold and mildew. As the QC Supervisor, I was
directly responsible for this task. I did controlled experiments using
different industrial anti-stain treatments, I made a ton of phone calls and
traveled over the Pacific Northwest and California to mills to see firsthand
the problems they had, both with stain & mildew AND the states Environmental
laws. The major issue that came about was that any product with a "Penta"
on it was highly scrutinized due to the toxicity levels of certain
chemicals. After spending time with Professors at the University of Oregon,
we all came up with the same conclusion, stay away from Penta products.
Mills that used dip tanks for their lumber were faced with crippling costs
of major environmental cleanups that it forced some of them to shut down. I
made sure our mill would not be forced with that type of closure. We went
with a "Kop-Coat Inc." product called "NP-1". I don't know personally what
products that they may have but I can attest first hand that on an
industrial level, the State of Alaska approved this companies products to be
used at a sawmill that was located next to a large salmon bearing stream and
salt water cove. One word of advise....and I do this religiously, when
using any new chemical or product that I am not sure of, I request an MSDS
sheet that quotes every chemical in the product as well as toxicity levels
and notes if it is a hazard to man or animal. Like I said, just my 2
cents....

Best Regards,

Steve
