So......what would you recommend ? And if the Dremel approach , which bits
would you suggest ( and where do you source yours - I'm in the UK )? If I
botch the groove , I'll just turn another bowl , so I'm prepared for a method
which has its failures , but I want to produce a crisp and neat jigsaw effect .

I'd be grateful for any advice on this , apart from the obvious one - to
give up ;>(

I think that after all the time you have into this project with your
experimenting, you could have used a hand tool and been finished days ago. I
suggest using a 3 mm veiner or a veiner with an outside measurement of 3 mm.
Hopefully your wood is not too hard. Draw the pattern and incise it with the
veiner. It does'nt have to be perfect on the depth because you said you will
fill the trench with resin. If it was any other project, i would suggest a
router but you are going to have to make a jig to hold and turn the
bowl......just making the jig would be harder than doing the hand carving.
