>From what I've heard, and experienced, the quality of Southern Basswood 

leaves much to be desired.
The Northern Basswood seems better. I get mine from "Naturally Minnesota" 
their on-line
catalog is:  http://www.carvingwood.us/. I've found them to have excellent 
Basswood.
You may get other recommendations... hopefully.
