Since I don't do this type of carving I haven't entered in, but when you say
"study the body and the bone structure and the muscle" I have a suggestion
that might help and help the storage also.  I have a book "Drawing the Head
and Figure" by Jack Hamm that several carvers in our club have, use, &
recommend.  It talks about head, figure, muscle groups and then goes on to
talk about "draping clothes on the figure".  It has very good pictures.
