I am a beginning carver and would like to do a relief. I don't have access
to basswood. I have looked on ebay but everything seems to be blocks and not
rectangles. Doesn't the starting block need to be like 8X10X2 at least?

gary it can be whatever size you desire. you can laminate pieces
together. I find it is easier to find the shapes I don't want than the ones I do.
Buy a piece that you can cut up and glue together. use yellow carpenters
glue, make sure the sides you are glueing are perfectly flat. spread glue evenly
and clamp together overnight. theres a bit more to it involving the
direction of the grains but its not hard to do. basic tools can get a decent join.
