My super short saga:

Started building along with Norm from the New Yankee Workshop. Got
disenfranchised after realizing I could not afford all the power tools he
used. Found "The Porch" - old tool list and found out people actually
built stuff before power tools - back to building and now collecting.

Then by chance I followed a link that someone posted to a website about
Ian Norbury. I went and checked it out and could not believe what could
be created artistically with wood. I set out to get a bunch of 5 dollar
fantasies (magazines), some cheap tools, and set out carving. So far I
have carved maybe 5 things - a couple of which even impressed me.

I believe the carving will soon take over most of my wood working. But
first I need to finish a rocking chair that I am building so I have
somewhere comfortable to sit.
