[Woodcarver] Stoning Defined For Maricha

Hi Maricha!
"Stoning" is a bird-carving term and is a technique of creating
texture using a high speed micro-grinder and a small "texturing bit".
These are made from (usually) aluminum oxide bonded to a shank. The bits
(or "stones") come in many shapes, but the ones I use most are
cone-shaped and cylinder shaped. You grind in each individual feather
barb one at a time. This technique can also be applied to hair or fur.
I use an NSK micro-grinder, but there are several great brands that do a
fine job, too...such as Gesswein, Ram, etc. These machines turn the
carving bits and stones at high RPM...usually up to 50,000 RPM, but some
machines will go faster (though most texturing stones are not rated for
speeds much over 40,000 RPM). After the feather has been "stoned", then
I further refine the feather detail by burning over the stoning with a
very fine and sharp woodburning tip to create yet more feather barbs.
This technique is demonstrated on my site, too:

Hope this answered you question OK!
