I think what Bill and George are refering to is called a french cleat. 
They are often used to hang some pretty heavy stuff in workshops.  A 
google search on french cleat will show several sites.  One of them is 
at http://www.newwoodworker.com/frenchcleat.html  I use them in the shop 
quite a bit cause it seems I can't decide where I want to hang my tool 
boards, and it gives me the opportunity to move them around each time I 
reorganize.
