Cool maquette, Mike.

Can't wait to see the finished product.

The sketches look familiar. Wasn't that a cartoon or logo for some company
at one time?

Chris,
Lori already did a great job on covering your question, so I'm just going
to
add my vote for Plastering as the medium of choice for carving models.
 It's
a bit more expensive, but worth it in the long run because you can recycle
it.

I was going to save this for when the project was carved, but...

shows my latest modeling effort from armature to finish <well, as
"finished"
as I tend to go>, I prefer the wooden tools as well as the metal loop
tools. Again, I agree with Lori... no plastic. From this model I take a
photo from the top and side to give me a cutting pattern for the bandsaw.
 I
shoot them from a as far away as possible to get a true a profile. Then I
print them out scaled to fit the block of wood. In this case the cut out
blank was still so "weird" looking that the clay model helped me even after
the pattern making stage by helping me see what large areas needed wasting
out.

Ivan has a great article on clay model making using Plastelina in the
latest
"carving" magazine.

Keep on Carvin'
