Hi Jan,

I'm repairing a big basswood mantel that was in a house fire. It was carved
by B. Simpson (I think is 2003). The mantel itself is not burnt, just nicked
and scratched from the firemen standing on it while busting into the stone
chimny to get the fire out. The stones were bounced off the mantel, they
stood on it scratching it with the pieces of mortor under their feet and it
was also covered with water and chemical foam. The top edge in front got
broken and will easily be fixed by carving it back a little. The owner also
wants me to add carving to both ends. I will scrape the finish off the top
and bottom before running it through a big belt surface sander. Half the
price of the job is fixing the fire damage covered by insurance and the
other half is the new carved area.

I'm getting read for my first spring show that will be this coming weekend
at Harper College in Palatine Illinois where I will be giving 5 seminars on
beginning carving, getting people interested in Carving Magazine and
promoting the North Suburban Carving Club in that area.

The end of next week should bring in an order for 4 cut out panels to cover
the pipes on a pipe organ in a church. Tina Stephens, one of my apprentices,
will be doing that job.
