My question to the wood turners is, do you glue a spacer
block to the wood that you are turning and screw your faceplate to that
spacer? If you do, what kind of glue are you using for that?

Forgot one. If I were to use glue other than hot melt glue, I would put a
piece of brown paper (grocery bags are good for this) between the spacer block
and the wood to be turned.
Also, if you wanted to make a split turning, glue two pieces of wood
together lengthwise with brown paper glued in between the two. When removed from
the lathe, you can split it with a chisel. Example, turning columns for a
fireplace with 1/2 the column on either side.
