[Woodcarver] antiquing look

Hi John,

I use this method to finish my carvings. They end up looking antiqued with
nice shadows and highlights.
1.	Boiled Linseed oil bath. I mix a little burnt sienna or plain sienna
with the oil – maybe an inch squeeze/16oz of oil.
2.	Paint entire piece with Minwax (or other brand) Provincial Stain (or
other dark color stain). Get it in the lines of the carving. Wipe if you
want – sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. This can be done while still
wet from #1 or after some drying.
3.	Paint with watered down, water-based acrylics. The thin coat of paint
covers the dark stain, but lets the antique look show through and highlights
the various carved crevices.
4.	Paint entire piece with shellac, or polyurethane. Easiest clean-up is
the water-based polyurethane Minwax has. As many coats as it takes to
satisfy you. I typically use just one.
I use this on basswood – but have done other light woods too. Try it – I
think it is what you are asking for.
