hi david,
to make a carving that not only giggles but makes others laugh , is lots of fun. when i am carving a caricature, sometimes it is so absurd that i have to stop carving because i am laughing so much at the expression of my own caricature and my own face, trying to make the gestures, to copy . great .
cheers
maricha

  Hi Maricha,

What I mean by good art is when you see something that speaks volumes maybe
really touches you or inspires you and enriches your life. As we produce
hopefully a few of our pieces achieve that level.

I would sooner look at an original work that is not perfect than a copy done
very well. That is not to say we should not copy. Copying is a great way to
learn, especially if we copy the masters. The other night another of my
apprentices was copying from Michelangelo. It was an excellent study as well
as a great inspiration. I'm sure that her original work will reflect what
  she learned from the study.
