"I would sooner look at an original work that is not perfect than a copy  
done very well. That is not to say we should not copy."
 
    Joe Dillete's comment about original versus  copy reminded me of the 
relief carving course I took with Chris Pye a couple  years ago.
    He asked that we draw a fish whereupon several  commented that they 
couldn't draw a fish. And he replied, draw a fish, even  if you don't know how. 
Remember, it is a woodcarving, not a fish. At that time  he strongly suggested 
that we draw our own patterns as much as possible  instead of copying. Again, he 
said with practice we would get  better. 
    He wasn't totally opposed to copying, but agreed  more with Joe's comment 
about carving your own original work. Sorry I am  not in Joe's area or I 
would try my best to get an apprenticeship there.
