I prefer working in properly dried mahogany, walnut, or cherry, to using
basswood. I love the edges I can do in walnut and the feel of carving mahogany.
It's funny how I developed a good/bad tactile relationship with certain kinds of
wood.
I wish I could work cypress knees (we have a lot of them here in FL.,
although there's a lot less every year), but is there a mysterious method to carving
them? I tried once and it was harder to work with than stone!

BTW - The name of the walnut products vendor I was looking for was, Lebanon
Supply Co. in Lebanon, Mo. They made a line of solid walnut plates, called the
Heirloom Walnut Ware.

Of course that was back when I had lots of dark hair and someone had just
discovered fire, and cooked food! Anybody else remember them? They put a green
and gold label on the back of the plate, and when I looked at one of my old
ones, it's still there. I think their little label is going to outlive me! And
I was worried that the plate wouldn't stand up over the years ...
