GOW 2005 News Release

You are invited to GOW 2005 (Gathering Of Woodcarvers) September 19
through
the 24 at The Carving Shop in Somonauk Illinois. Over 40 seminars.

Attention children of all ages!

Peter Benson, President of the British Woodcarving Association, is
giving a
talk Tuesday evening September 20, 2005 at The Carving Shop at 7 PM.
Peter's
will talk about designing your family coat of arms. He will instruct
us in
the different symbolism and how to incorporate those symbols into a
meaningful coat of arms specifically to fit our family. On Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday and Saturday Peter will be teaching classes on
carving your
family coat of arms. There is no cost to attend Peter's talk on Tuesday
evening and we encourage everyone to attend even if you have no
intention of
carving a coat of arms.

It would be nice to know how to interrupt a coat of arms, especially
if you
were a knight ready to fight another knight and you saw a chicken in his
coat of arms. Right away you would think to yourself, no problem. One
actually story that happened to me, I was designing a logo, for a news
letter, for the company I worked for. The design included two knights in
armor on horseback jousting. On their shield I had a diagonal line.
After
drawing one knight I took a picture making the other a mirror image,
turning
the diagonal line the opposite direction. Not knowing the meaning of
that
diagonal line I made one knight a legitimate son and the other, with the
diagonal line in the opposite direction, a bastard. Woodcarvers often
get
commissions to carve a coat of arm. It would be nice to know the
meaning of
the symbols so you are not telling everyone that your customer is a
bastard.

Peter's talk is free and class will cost $20, which includes the
block of
wood. You will need chisels, mallet and clamps to hold to the table. (3
students minimum, 10 maximum)

Bob Mau ,who is organizing the GOW seminars, wishes me to pass along
a few
web sites of some of our other instructors. Please check the sites to
see
some of the talented people who are making themselves available to
pass on
their knowledge. I assure you that what they get for teaching class
will not
cover their expenses of being here at your disposal for a whole week. I
encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity.
