Sometimes, for unknown reasons, a piece of information will come your way
and a light will go off. Happened to me yesterday reading Chris Pye's
newsletter.
Someone was complaining about their "not so good" carving. He replied,
"how many hours have you spent carving in the last few days, week, or month?"
Uh, not very many. He said he had carved between 30 and 50 hours in the past
week. And, he has been carving for 30+ years. Duh!
It just hit me right where I needed it! Now its off to the shop to do
some carving.
Sharpening. It is not a mysterious process. Would strongly suggest that
anyone who wants to really learn how to sharpen get Ev Everett's CD via Big
Dog's shop. It is only about $25+ plus shipping. Ev explains in detail what it
is that you are trying to do (to get a sharp tool) and then demonstrates
step by step process for the various carving tools.
And he covers the various equipment that can be used to sharpen. You
can get started for not more than $15 to $25 dollars.
I cannot wait for someone else to sharpen for me. Sometimes, I may get
up at 3 or 4 in the morning (when I cannot sleep) and want to carve and the
tool I need is not as sharp as I want. Nice to be able to do it myself.
Also, the more I have sharpened the less time it takes.
