Having spent several years in the Black Forest, you have to be extremely 
careful when buying wood carvings.  Make sure they are HAND carved.  Many of 
the shops sell what appear to be hand carved items, but the really are 
extremely well done roughouts as we would call them in this country.  Some 
of the machine carved items are really hard to distinguish.
