I would advise that you use a different soap bar. Or open the bars now so
that they can dry out. The soap has become very soft and gummy, and will not hold
together for detail. It wasn't like this years ago when most people used that
product for soap carving.
You may also want to get pizza boxes so that the students droppings do not
hit the ground or floor but end up in the card board boxes. It also saves your
tables. The soft soap particles on the floor/ground create a very unsafe
skating rink. I know its only soap, but think safety. Plastic picnic utensils work
very well however the old popsicle sticks in my estimation were safer if
prepared correctly. This all depends on age and strength of student.
Use blocky patterns, a goldfish is easy and looks quit nice when done. But
does not have a lot of small detail.
The best advise I can suggest to you, is try it yourself and do not wait
until the day of the class. Hopefully you are looking to promote the art of
carving.
