Maura,
George's teaching was one of the "heroic" stories of the NEWR 2005. He came flying by my teaching area trying to scare up some mallets, but I hadn't brought any with me. Somebody pointed out a pile of birch logs and suggested making some. In the process of banging on them he stirred up a wasps nest and got stung several times, but still managed enough mallets for his class and a high level of enthusiasm. Thank God he wasn't allergic I was extremely surprised and very humbled at what his students were producing with a straight chisels. Luckily he had one of his mallets left after class, and I am now the proud owner of a George Basehore, signature series, red-neck power carver.
Keep on Carvin'

I just love the Birch mallets that were quickly hand made by George just in time for his class. It was his idea to teach his relief class the way that he first started carving, with a carpenters chisel and mallet. Can you imagine that? That's why Merrilee is hitting him.
