The first carving I ever did was done with a 5/8" carpenter's chisel. Was
working for a furniture repair shop at the time. Had an antique chest of
drawers and the front left bun foot was split off and gone.
Boss wanted to know if I could carve one. Yup, I said without any
hesitation. All the feet and corner posts were maple. Cleaned up the 1/2 foot that
was left and carved it to match the other half.
After that did a fair amount of carving on furniture with the same tool.
Carved feet on sofas and chairs, carved portions of antique furniture that
had broken off and lost, etc.
A chisel is still one of my favorite carving tools.
