I agree with Terri.  It looks like the skelton of a sagarough (Sp?) cactus. 
There's a big one inside the Visitor Center at the S-------National Moument 
Park near Tucson AZ that would really be worth working on..  Ray Mighells

I think that mysterious wood is the skeleton from a cactus plant.  But then, 
I'm from Michigan so what do I know about desert plants, eh.
