My opinion may not be worth too much as I'm out of the carving "mainstream" here in far northern California. I don't get to more than one or two shows a year. That being said, my opinion is that interest in wood carving is declining a bit. I'm primarily a figurative or caricature carver and it seems like the bloom is off or at least a bit tarnished in that genre. I could be wrong, but it feels like there are fewer new books on the subject as well, which is an indication of lessening interest. I hope I'm wrong as I still enjoy my carving and want to see new and innovative carving subjects and carvings.

Bill, with your kind permission, could you please post this message to the list if it meets with your approval. thanks
I know some of you have already replied to this topic and you can disregard this message. For those of you who said they would reply and haven't yet, let this be a friendly kick in the butt. I will be working on this till the beginning of August and hope to wrap it up then. To those of you who haven't been involved yet, Let me tell you a bit of my project. I am doing what started out as a dissertation on the state of woodcarving today, though it seems to be growing into something larger as there has been interest expressed by carving magazines and publishers. Here is a chance for you to contribute something to it. I am asking each and everyone of you what your opinion is. The exact question is
"what in your opinion is the state of woodcarving in America today"
for those out of the country please just answer as to the general state of woodcarving or using your country specifically. I would especially encourage any novice carvers among us to participate as their opinions are valuable to my project also. The question can be answered from any perspective that you wish. As an artist, as a person in a carving related business, as a hobbyist, as a female woodcarver or just based on your life experiences as a carver. Your answer need not be long as I know that everyone is busy with their own things. Even a sentence or two would be very welcome. Each and every comment will be included in my project as long as they are relevant so please include your credits with your reply. Let us know what type of carver you consider yourself. Please email your reply's privately to me at
