[Woodcarver] flesh tones

Hi Jim,
A red flag went up when you mentioned using oil to make flesh tones on
cherry. As Susan Irish mentioned oil has transparent characteristics. Cherry
will oxidize changing color from reddish pink to a dark reddish brown. A UV
blocker will slow down this oxidation but not stop it. The result will be
your flesh tone will be changing as the base color changes over time.
Painting on woods like cherry requires a fully opaque paint to block UV.

I want to take the time to thank everyone for the information submitted
here. Basically I want to try and get the effect of using a dye on a piece
of cherry to match some stone work I am doing. The stone is called pink but
is more flesh colored than pink. I want to use the oil because of the color
fastness of it.
I have also enjoyed the information about oil verses acrylic paints. I have
to admit the main reason I use oil is because that is what someone in this
group got me started with and I liked the outcome. Thanks Mush!
Oh, one more thing, WHERE'S MY LOBSTAH?

It has been a while sense I have had a need for flesh tone color. Can any
one give me the mix using oil paint and mini-wax natural stain?
Much appreciated!
