Hi Glenda,

Yes, suntan lotion does have different degrees of UV blockers depending on
the number. Because it's a lotion it doesn't last long. Exterior varnishes
have UV blockers and they eventually load up and break down. The satin and
semi-gloss exterior varnishes break down before the gloss exterior varnish
because they (the deglosser) loads up faster.

Opaque painted coatings block all UV from the wood until the paint breaks
down through wear or moisture.
