I have carved quite a few pins. Many "patterns" come straight out my head. (I'm sure there's some influence with stuff I've seen.) A few pencil strokes on a blank piece of paper and there's enough of a pattern to carve what I was thinking. I've also used pictures from catalogs, google image search, coloring books (might have to reduce the line drawing). The field is wide open. Since pins are "half round" you don't have to worry about making both sides the same.
