CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
KVW SEMINAR JUNE 16-19, 2005
Registration will begin at 1 PM Thursday June 16, and classes will start
shortly thereafter. Friday classes begin at 9 AM. The last class session
will be over by 11 AM Sunday morning, June 19, 2005. Each student should
bring his or her own hand tools, a light and extension cord. In some
classes, the instructor's) may suggest the need for specific tools. For
your
convenience, tools and carving supplies will be available during the
seminar. Some instructors will offer books, and related carving
materials
for sale.
A. Carving in the round - Instructor: Carlan Honaker
Carlan has been teaching at nationally known seminars for the past 25
years.
He offers private lessons in his own studio. Carlan is a member of the
National Woodcarvers Association and a member of the Kaw Valley
Woodcarvers
Association. Different projects will be offered to carve, such as Old
World
Santa, or a Bavarian Mountain Climber. Please call Carlan about
projects not
listed. Price range for the blanks is $25.00 to $30.00. All skill levels
included. Class size: 8 to 10
B. Relief carving and Pyrography - Instructor: Wanda Potter
Wanda is a member of the Kaw Valley Woodcarvers Association and has been
carving for nineteen years. Along with winning many blue ribbons for her
carvings at the local, regional and international levels of competition
Wanda has taught this class for several years. In addition to relief
carving, Wanda carves Northern Wildlife in the round, caricatures, chip
carves and woodburns. Pyrography and relief patterns and boards will
vary in
price or you can bring your own. Students will have a choice of three
relief
patterns. Price range of the relief patterns will be $12.00 to $18.00,
plus
the cost of stained glass if used. All skill levels accepted. Class
size: 8
to 10.
C. The Head of Christ - Instructor: Len Dillon
Len has been teaching for 23 years. He is from Mountain Home, Arkansas.
Len
has taught at Doane College 10 years. Subject will be the head of
Christ.
Student choice will be in Butternut or Bass Wood. Each student will work
from a study cast model. Duplicated blanks are $35. Len will have a
large
assortment of blanks and supplies at the seminar.
D. Caricature Animals and Humans - Instructor: Bob Kinder
Bob is a well-known carver of many different subjects. His method of
carving
and teaching is easy to learn and understand. Bob will offer a variety
of
objects to carve. You will learn the skills needed when carving in the
round
and relief. Bob is a member of Kaw Valley Woodcarvers Association and
has
taught woodcarving many years. Over the years Bob has carved at Doane
College and Gretna, Nebraska gaining valuable experience and insight in
the
art of carving. Students should bring their favorite carving tools,
primarily small hand tools, palm tools, a sharp knife, gauges, skews,
favorite paintbrushes and a carving light. Cost of blanks: $6 to $10.
Class
size: 7.
E. Deep Relief carving - Bill Butterfield
Bill has taught at Doane College, Crete, Nebraska for 18 years, and at
Silver Dollar City in Branson, Mo. We are delighted that Bill has
agreed to
teach at Baker this year. This is a great opportunity to learn from this
well-known carver. This year the project will be to carve and paint the
relief of a "Cabin In The Woods", 8" by 15" by 1". Bring clamps, gauges
#3,
#5 and a 1" gauge if you have it, plus a mallet, bench knife, wood
burner
and non-slip mat. Other projects will be available. Cost of wood will
be in
the $25 price range. Class size is limited to 10.
F. Woodburning or Chip Carving - Sheila Hunter.
Sheila has been an avid wood carver for the past 20 plus years. She
enjoys
all types of carving and teaches in the round, relief, chip carving and
wood
burning. Sheila is truly a diverse artist. She has competed and won
numerous
awards in various categories throughout the mid-west and Canada. Sheila
will
offer a broad selection of wooden plates and boxes for your projects.
Cost
will range from $5.00 to $30.00 depending on size and shapes you
select. If
you have wood burning equipment, bring it. She will have some burners
and
tips available to use in class as well as a limited supply of burners
and
tips for sale. She will have patterns or if you have a picture of a
scene or
an animal or some type of wild life picture, bring it. Chip carving
projects
will be offered so bring your chip carving knives if you plan to chip
carve.
Class size: 10 maximum.
G. Buffalo Bust - Jeff Rhodes
Jeff has been carving for 15 years, with a concentration on animals.
Jeff is
a member of The Kaw Valley Woodcarvers Assn. He has developed great
skill
with carving then woodburning to make his animals look realistic. Jeff
has
taught many classes. He has attended Doane College Seminars several
times.
Blanks will cost $20 to $30.
H. Basket Weaving - Paula Bailey
For those who do not want to carve -- take Paula's class. This is a
great
opportunity to learn about basket weaving. Baskets will be woven into
various sizes, shapes and designs. Paula has taught at many seminars
including Doane College, Gretna, Baker University, and Wahpeton. Paula
will
have all the necessary materials to create your basket. All skill levels
welcome. Materials cost $20 to $30.
I. I. Caricatures - Jon Nelson
Jon is from Colorado Springs, CO. Jon has been teaching twelve years.
Long
time instructor at Creed, CO. Jon is an excellent caricature carving
instructor and has taught in seven different states. Jon will teach
Santa's,
Gnomes, Snowmen, Cowboys and Mountain Men. Project size 4" to 11". You
may
paint your finished carving in class. Blanks will cost $10 to $20.

Unless otherwise indicated, attendees will be randomly assigned to share
rooms. The University will supply sheets, pillowcase, towel, and
washcloth.
A blanket and any other personal items for your comfort are recommended,
such as extra pillows, fan, work light, and bath mat. Please, refer to
the
attached class discription, select the class of your choice. Classes
will be
filled on a first paid returned registration basis, as per postmark
date. If
a class has insufficient enrollment, it may be canceled. Please indicate
both 1st and 2nd choices. Prior to the seminar, your instructors will
be in
contact with you if special tools are required for the class.
