[Woodcarver] re:pins

I haven't done the pins yet but have done  pendents
Would I be correct in thinking that my really hard wood  like  rose wood etc.  would be best for
pins?

  Now being knew to this "pin" thing. As I under stand it each carver would "carver" 10 pins? is there an example of size design so I can get a feel for it ? I am very interested but I would like to know what I am in for first. Thanks.
