Hi Merrilee!
Thank you for the compliment! I haven't done a cardinal, but there's
a book called "Songbird Carving 2" by Rosalyn Leach Daisey that has both
a male and a female cardinal project. Also, Bob Guge has a cardinal
study cast, as well as a little booklet on painting a male cardinal. Any
of these can be obtained from almost any bird carving supplier. I'd try
the stores of our members here first and if you can't find them there,
try Sugarpine Woodcarving Supply http://www.sugarpinewoodcarving.com/
Perhaps your local library also has a copy of the book.
Another place you may want to try is Bird Carvers Online:
A few members got together and did a Community Carving project of a
female cardinal from start to finished paint...there is a pattern there
(basically the same as a male cardinal, except for color). This is
basically a step-by-step project where the participating members posted
their progress as well as demos on how they did certain things. There
are also some chat transcripts where more specifics were presented.
Here's the link to the main project Discussion Board:

I think you have to be a member to see the photos (but don't quote me on
that), but registration is free and there are TONS of helpful topics of
all aspects of birdcarving.
Hope this helps!
Lori
