Hello all,
Our report on the Florida Roundup...
David and I thought the Roundup was a success. You have to understand
that the weather was quite inclimate for being out-of-doors. At least
the first two days were rather damp and crisp.
In spite of the weather the people turned out:
...85 registered carvers
...12 interested in starting a local carving club
...many people wandering through the park and learning by watching the
carvers
...the State of Florida is excited about having this again due to
"lots" of positive feedback. They appreciate the educational aspect of
the Roundup.
The carvers came & carved all bundled up in Winter clothing the first
couple of days. The enthusiasm was there and everyone was jovial and
fun-loving. I have to say, no one was complaining. I think everyone
was just so appreciative to have an event like that to attend. AND
this is the type of thing that memories are created around.
Saturday and Sunday were warmer and attendance was up. Also, word of
mouth was a factor to inspire others to come. We taught several people
who are non-carvers but then we usually do. Because fan-carving is so
different from other carving, we draw a different crowd. Also, the
history, legends and customs that surround fan birds from various
cultures is an attraction to the type of person that enjoys historical
tradition. So we really do attract a different crowd then other
teachers would.
The Manatee Springs State park was a beautiful place. A snowy egret
came winging along the channel and landed amongst the cypress. The
manatees came lazily drifting along. The little deer helped us unload
our van and sniffed of our wares. It was common to look up and see
deer meandering amongst the tables. Scuba divers came daily to take
advantage of the sink holes and channels. The park was a great setting
to kick back and enjoy.
Under the circumstances I think the Roundup was "very" well attended:
damp, cold, first year, Gator Nationals weekend & Palm Sunday. I have
no doubt that next year will expand "greatly." My reasoning for that
is because most people were going to take their experience (along with
information) back to their clubs. Word of mouth is a great
advertisement.
David and I appreciate all the work Tony and Jim put into organizing
the Florida Roundup. We are looking forward to next year.
Best
Sally and David
