I wanted to thank Alex and Bill for their input on these turning tools of my friends. It seems that my friend didn't really know what price his father gave for the tools. He was going by a page that he had pulled from a cataloge somewhere and was comparing Top of the line "Crown" tools to his fathers. I looked at the tools and we discussed the fact that there is a wide variance of quailty even within brand names. He agreed that the tools in the catalog did appear to be of a much higher quality then his dads. Even with only looking at the photos, we noticed a quality difference. (Brass caps vs: steel and rosewood handles vs: unfinished wood)
I could not tell what type of steel his tools are made of as there are no quality markings such as M2, M4 etc. I do know enough about turning tools to know that you want High Speed Steel unless, you really... really enjoy sharpening alot.
I told him that he may want to look on EBay and check out the prices there for comparisionl. We will see what happens from here. I am thinking that I may just wait and choose my tools at the time that I purchase a lathe. That way, I can get just what I need and not be guessing. Thanks again for everyone's input and ideas.
