Mike I do the same thing. I will have a bottle of this mixture already to
go.(water added to a consistency of a stain) Since it is thin I can modify
the mixture as I am using it by adding different colors.(browns, reds,
blues....)
I will try this on a practice piece first if am not sure how it will look.
Your practice piece of wood should be prepared as your original carving.
Whether you seal it with linseed oil,or water,or some other pre-stain the
working conditions of the carving and the "test" board should be the same.
