Hi Peter,
I'm not one to give rules for carving, in fact I teach that there are no
rules. However my person preference would be to get the ton of your
grandfather's carving tools, learn how to sharpen them and learn how to use
them. It will open up a whole new world of carving for you. You will
unlimited in what you will be able to do. I also feel that your carving
enjoyment would be much greater.
