I also have a tool question. I have been reading Chris Pye's book on
lettering and he recommends a full size double beveled chisel about 30mms or
1 1/4 inches for most of the work with straight lines. I have looked on a
variety of sites and in local stores but never see these in the carving
tools sections. I find plently of doubled beveled palm size chisels. Should
I buy a carpenter's tool? Will it be the same? Thanks for any advice.

Wow, thanks everyone for the great input. I think I've just stepped into
the deep end of the pool! I'll have to break out the old tools and see what
they're about. Are there any good magazines or the like at places like
Michaels or Barnes & Noble that offer introductory input to hobbyists on
woodcarving? I might need to do some reading up! Any good hobby shops near
Boston?
Thanks All!

Pete:
There are all kinds of tools out there that you may want to take a look at.
If I was restricted to one type of tool it would be full sized mallet
carving tools. However, I have mallet tools, hand tools, different types of
high speed grinders, 45 degree angle grinders with Arbortech attachments,
etc. What I'm really saying is you ought to contact Big Dog from the list
and ask him to send you one of his catalogs. If you are not aware of the
different types of tools available this will be a real education. Larry is
a fair guy and great to do business with. Okay Larry ....... pay up. LOL
I hope you enjoy your carving.

I'm kinda new to the wc culture here in NE. I'm kinda glued to my Dremel,
haven't spent much time outside of that and hands on sanding. Kindof a
video game-raised guy stuck on technology. Anyone else out there stick to a
single tool set? I've got a ton of my grandfather's old carving tools, but
I never use them. Stuck on Dremel. Is there anything better? I'm open to
ideas, because it's not exactly easy to hold when doing detail work.
Thanks!
-Pete

Peter:
The two magazines that I'd suggest that you take a peek at are Carving
Magazine and Woodcarving Illustrated. Both will be of lots of help to you
and should be available at your larger book stores. You can get a peek at
both on the internet. I don't have the web addresses at my computer but if
you put the names in your search engine they will come up.

Hi friends,
I received my W3E gift today from Jan the Woodbutcher. It was an old
fashioned lady with hat atop a caged golf ball. Even had some chip carving
on the cage. Thanks, Jan. But I'm wondering when you ever met my wife.
Could such a likeness be only coincidence?
