Steve....being in Alaska you know that the First Nation People used alder for a lot of their MASKS.....WHEN ITS GREEN and kept so with wet towels til the project is done....BUTalder is hard as nails when its dried......our Red Cedar on the west coast is nothing compared to the Red Cedar in the east and mid west.....red cedar can be chip carved with SOME success....i did a number of peices in my post and beam home (at the junctions of the post and beams)here in Oregon (Lindal cedar type) BUT you really have to have extra sharp tools and constant stropping to accomplish a reasonable job.....but it can be done.....pick simple designs and not to small details and you will do OK.....rots o ruck
