I have burned pine picnic tables and the look is real nice.......but you need to put a good varnish on it afterwards if that is the look you want..that is if you are going to varnish...for some reason regular spray poly comes off within a year and it looks patchy...so use very good spar varnish....but also let it age a week or more ater you burn it.....Just what i found out...from experience....

Hello Carvers,

After spending a couple of hard working days learning to chainsaw a bear with Gordon Bentley, I took him, the bear, not Gordon, home and am now giving it shape and detail and thinking about how to finish.

The carving is done in a pine log. About 13" diameter and bout 4' tall. It is very green. It has been fun and now I am filing and sanding the snout and texturing the fur with V gouge and mallet. I thought I might try to burn it for color (black) but have no experience doing this. I've seen them painted black or stained and finished with varnish but thought I'd like to try the scorched look.

Anyone have any info, pros or cons or no no's for me to read? Would appreciate any link or resource that might give me some direction.

Patti
