carving in oak is great but you need sharp tools with short bevels.... and a good mallet.... if you are a beginner, perhaps you could use the oak to make yourself a wine goblet or something easier so that you do not become discouraged with the hardness of the timber, and learning the carving technique on oak. make your design as simple as possible to start with and be sure to keep your tools sharp as you go.

A friend has just told me they have taken down 6 - 60 ft oak trees.They offered me to pick some out to carve .I am still getting to know which woods I can work with.I can't afford to buy all the wood I would like,and like to take advantage of found wood whenever possible .I like to carve faces and woodspirits,and wonder if this oak would be worth getting.
Your experience would be much appreciated, Doug N
